YouTube Creator Awards: every play button, what it takes, and how to claim one

The play button on the shelf behind a creator is one of the most recognisable things on YouTube. It’s also one of the few milestones you can hold in your hands.
Here’s every level, what YouTube checks before sending one, and how claiming actually works.
Every Creator Award level
| Award | Subscribers | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Silver Creator Award | 100,000 | The silver play button. The first award most creators can realistically aim for. |
| Gold Creator Award | 1,000,000 | The gold play button. |
| Diamond Creator Award | 10,000,000 | A crystal play button. |
| Custom Creator Award | 50,000,000 | A one-off award designed around the channel. |
| Red Diamond Creator Award | 100,000,000 | A red crystal play button, held by a very small number of channels. |
There’s no physical award for 1,000 or 10,000 subscribers. 1,000 is a milestone for YouTube Partner Program eligibility, but the shelf starts at 100K.
Reaching the number isn’t the whole requirement
YouTube doesn’t send an award automatically the moment the counter ticks over. Every channel is reviewed first. YouTube looks for:
- Good standing. No active Community Guidelines strikes, and nothing that breaks the Terms of Service or monetization policies.
- Real subscribers. Subscriber counts inflated through purchased or incentivised subscribers, sub4sub, or bots can disqualify a channel, and YouTube’s spam filters may remove those subscribers anyway.
- Original content. Channels built mainly on re-uploads or compilations of other people’s work are less likely to qualify.
- An active channel. The channel should still be uploading and following the rules at the time of review.
YouTube can decline an award even when the number is reached. If you’re getting close to a milestone, it’s worth checking for any open policy issues in YouTube Studio.
How to claim it
The process is roughly:
- Hit the milestone. YouTube’s count is based on your subscriber number after spam filtering, which can be slightly lower than what you see on a given day.
- Wait for the review. This can take a few weeks.
- Get the notification. Eligible channels receive a message, usually in YouTube Studio or by email, with a redemption code and instructions.
- Enter your details. Use the redemption link to give a shipping address and the name to put on the plaque.
- Wait for delivery. Shipping time depends on where you are. In some countries you may need to pay customs or import fees.
The award itself is free. YouTube doesn’t sell play buttons, and anyone offering to sell you one, or asking for payment to “fast-track” yours, is not YouTube.
What else comes with the milestones
The awards are the visible part. Channels at higher subscriber counts may also get access to things such as partner support and creator programmes, which vary by region and change over time. YouTube’s Creator Awards page and the Benefits section of YouTube Studio are the places to check what your channel currently qualifies for.
The award is a lagging indicator
Every play button marks videos you’ve already made. The habits that get a channel to 100,000 are the same ones that get it to 1,000: clear topics, thumbnails that survive the feed, videos that deliver early, and a lot of uploads.
If you’re working toward your first one, our pre-publish checklist covers the small things worth getting right on every video along the way.
Frequently asked questions
What are the YouTube Creator Awards?
They're physical awards YouTube gives channels that reach major subscriber milestones. The best known are the Silver Creator Award at 100,000 subscribers, the Gold Creator Award at 1 million, and the Diamond Creator Award at 10 million. Higher tiers exist for 50 million and 100 million subscribers.
How many subscribers do you need for a YouTube play button?
100,000 subscribers for the Silver Creator Award, 1 million for Gold, 10 million for Diamond, 50 million for the Custom Creator Award, and 100 million for the Red Diamond Creator Award.
Is the YouTube play button free?
Yes. YouTube doesn't charge for Creator Awards. Some creators may have to cover customs or import fees depending on their country.
Is there a YouTube award for 1,000 subscribers?
No. There's no physical award for 1,000 subscribers. 1,000 subscribers is a milestone for YouTube Partner Program eligibility, but the first Creator Award is the Silver award at 100,000.
How do I claim my YouTube Creator Award?
When an eligible channel reaches a milestone, YouTube reviews it and, if it qualifies, sends a notification with a redemption code and instructions, usually in YouTube Studio or by email. You then enter your shipping details. The review and delivery can take several weeks.
Why didn't I get my YouTube play button?
Hitting the subscriber count doesn't guarantee an award. YouTube reviews each channel for compliance with its Community Guidelines, Terms of Service and monetization policies, checks that the subscriber count is genuine, and looks at whether the channel is active. Channels that mostly re-upload others' content, have recent strikes, or gained subscribers artificially may not qualify.
