The last 15 minutes before you hit Publish

The TubePrep Team · · 3 min read

There’s a particular kind of regret that only YouTubers know. The video is live. The notification has gone out. And then you notice it: the chapter list didn’t take, the thumbnail headline is hiding behind the duration badge, or the description still says “LINK HERE”.

You can fix most of these after the fact. But the first hour after publishing is when the most people see your video, and the thumbnail they see is the one you uploaded, not the one you fixed at minute 40.

So here’s the routine. It’s short on purpose. A checklist that takes an hour gets skipped; one that takes fifteen minutes becomes a habit.

1. Watch the export, not the timeline (5 min)

Scrub through the exported file, not your project. Exports occasionally do things the timeline didn’t: a dropped audio track, a flash frame, a title card that rendered with the wrong font because a font didn’t embed.

You don’t need to watch the whole thing at 1x. Jump through it, and give extra attention to:

  • The first 30 seconds. Most viewers who leave, leave here. Is it tight?
  • Every cut between sections. That’s where audio pops and stray frames live.
  • The very end. Make sure nothing trails off into silence or gets clipped mid-sentence.

2. Check the thumbnail at real size (2 min)

Your thumbnail looks great at 1280 pixels wide. Nobody sees it at 1280 pixels wide.

  • Preview it with YouTube’s overlays on top. The duration badge in the bottom-right corner is the usual culprit, and it’s worth understanding exactly what gets covered.
  • Shrink it to phone-feed size and see if the text is still readable.
  • Check the file: 1280×720, under 2 MB.

3. Validate your chapters (2 min)

Chapters fail silently, which is the worst way to fail. Before you paste them in, confirm:

  • The first timestamp is 0:00.
  • There are at least three.
  • Each chapter is at least 10 seconds long, including the final one.
  • They’re in order.

If the edit changed late, double-check that the timestamps match the final cut, not the version from yesterday. We’ve written up the common chapter mistakes in more detail.

4. Read the description out loud (3 min)

Reading out loud catches things your eyes skim past. Look specifically for:

  • Placeholder text. “LINK HERE”, “TODO”, “[sponsor code]”. It happens to everyone eventually.
  • Dead or wrong links. Click every one. Affiliate links in particular have a habit of expiring.
  • The first two lines. They show up above the “…more” fold and in search results. Make them count; don’t spend them on “Hey guys, welcome back”.
  • Sponsor disclosures. If the video includes paid promotion, make sure it’s disclosed in the video and that the paid promotion box is checked in Studio.

5. Captions (2 min)

If you upload your own captions, upload the final version, generated from the final cut. Captions made from an earlier edit drift out of sync after the first changed section and stay wrong for the rest of the video.

If you rely on auto-captions, it’s still worth a quick skim once they’re generated for names, brand terms, and anything technical. Auto-captions are good these days, but they’re spectacularly confident about spelling your guest’s surname wrong.

6. The settings you forget about (1 min)

These are all one-click, which is exactly why they get missed:

  • Audience setting (made for kids or not). This affects comments, notifications and more, so it’s worth getting right.
  • End screen and cards. Pointing to a relevant video, not the one from three months ago you set as a default and forgot.
  • Visibility and schedule. Double-check the date and the time zone on scheduled uploads.
  • Playlist. Add it now, while you remember.

Make it boring

None of this is hard. That’s the point. It’s a list of small, dull checks that each take a minute or two, and the value isn’t in any single one; it’s in never having to think about them again.

Copy this list into your notes app. Trim the bits that don’t apply to your channel and add the ones that do; maybe you always forget to update a pinned comment, or your intro music has a habit of clipping. After a few uploads you won’t need the list at all.

And if you want to speed up the fiddly parts: TubePrep’s thumbnail checker, chapter validator, read-time estimator, and SRT cleaner all run in your browser and never upload your files, which matters when the video you’re checking hasn’t been announced yet.
