YouTube chapters not working? A troubleshooting guide

The TubePrep Team · · 3 min read

We’ve written before about the four rules that make YouTube chapters appear. This post is for when you think you followed them and the progress bar is still one long, unbroken line.

Work through this list in order. It goes from the most likely cause to the least.

Step 1: Recheck the four rules, literally

Every chapter list has to meet all four:

  1. The first timestamp is 0:00.
  2. There are at least three timestamps.
  3. Every chapter is at least 10 seconds long, including the last one.
  4. Timestamps go in ascending order.

“I checked those” is the most common sentence that precedes finding one of them broken. The two that catch people:

  • The last chapter. Its length depends on the video’s runtime, which isn’t written anywhere in the description. If your final line is 11:55 Outro and the video is 12:02, that chapter is seven seconds long and the whole list is ignored.
  • Edits after the fact. You trimmed a section in the edit, re-exported, and updated most of the timestamps. One line now points past a later one, or two chapters are now four seconds apart.

Paste the list into the Chapter Validator to rule these out mechanically. Then check the last timestamp against the real runtime yourself, because no tool reading a description can know that number.

Step 2: Make sure the timestamps are in the description

Timestamps in a comment, even a pinned one, are clickable but never become chapters. The same goes for timestamps you put in the video itself or in a community post. Chapters come from the description and nowhere else.

While you’re in the description: put the list on its own lines, one chapter per line, timestamp first. If it’s buried mid-paragraph, move it out.

Step 3: Look for characters you can’t see

This one is maddening because the list looks perfect.

If you drafted your timestamps in Google Docs, Notion, a notes app, or a chat message, the paste can carry characters that look normal but aren’t: non-breaking spaces, zero-width characters, curly punctuation, or a full-width colon : from a Japanese or Chinese keyboard. To you, 1:30 and 1:30 look nearly identical. To the parser, only one is a timestamp.

Other things to look for while you’re there:

  • A capital O instead of a zero (1:O5).
  • Single-digit seconds (2:5 instead of 2:05).
  • Seconds over 59 (3:75).
  • Videos over an hour written as 75:00 instead of 1:15:00.

The fix: delete the list and retype it directly in YouTube Studio, or paste it through a plain-text editor first. The Chapter Validator will also flag lines it can’t read as timestamps.

Step 4: Give it a few minutes

Chapters don’t always appear the instant you hit save. Wait a few minutes, then reload the video, ideally in a private window so you’re not looking at a cached page. Don’t rewrite a list that’s actually fine just because it took a moment to show up.

Step 5: Check the automatic chapters setting

In YouTube Studio, under the video’s details, there’s an Allow automatic chapters option. It explains a couple of confusing situations:

  • You see chapters you never wrote. Your list is probably invalid, so YouTube generated its own instead. Fix your list (steps 1–3) and yours will take priority.
  • You expected auto chapters and got nothing. Automatic chapters aren’t generated for every video, and YouTube doesn’t promise them. If you want chapters, write them.

Step 6: Make sure the video can have chapters

A few kinds of video just don’t get them:

  • Shorts. Chapters live on the regular player’s progress bar, which Shorts don’t have.
  • Live streams in progress. Add your timestamps after the stream ends, to the archived video’s description.
  • Some individual videos. YouTube says chapters may not be available on every video, and it doesn’t always say why. If a list passes every check above and still won’t appear after a day, that’s the likely explanation, and it isn’t something you can fix from the description.

Once they’re working

Chapters do more than split up the progress bar. They show up as a list viewers can browse, and they can appear as “key moments” in Google search results. Both of those surfaces show your chapter titles, so it’s worth making them descriptive: “Why the cheap tripod won” earns a click that “Part 3” never will.

And next time, check the list before the video goes live. Run your timestamps through the Chapter Validator while the edit is still open. It runs in your browser, so you can use it on a video that’s still private.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my YouTube chapters not working?

Almost always because the timestamp list breaks one of YouTube's four rules: the first timestamp must be 0:00, there must be at least three timestamps, each chapter must be at least 10 seconds long, and timestamps must be in ascending order. If any one rule is broken, YouTube ignores the whole list. Other causes include timestamps placed in a comment instead of the description, hidden characters pasted from another app, and the video being a Short.

Do the YouTube chapter timestamps have to start at 0:00?

Yes. The first timestamp must be exactly 0:00 (00:00 also works). A list that starts at 0:01 or later, even by one second, won't create chapters.

What is the minimum length of a YouTube chapter?

Each chapter must be at least 10 seconds long, including the last chapter, which runs to the end of the video. You also need at least three chapters in total.

Do timestamps in a pinned comment create chapters?

No. Timestamps in comments, including pinned comments, become clickable links but don't create chapters on the progress bar. Chapters only come from timestamps in the video description.

How long does it take for YouTube chapters to appear?

Usually a few minutes after you save the description. Refresh the video page, or reopen it in a private window, before you start changing the timestamps.

Can I add chapters to a video that's already published?

Yes. Edit the description in YouTube Studio, add a valid timestamp list, and save. Chapters work on older videos the same way they do on new ones.

Why does my video show chapters I didn't write?

Those are YouTube's automatic chapters. If 'Allow automatic chapters' is on in the video's settings and your own timestamp list is missing or invalid, YouTube may generate its own. Fix your list and your chapters will take priority, or turn the setting off in YouTube Studio.

Do YouTube Shorts support chapters?

No. Chapters are a feature of the regular video player's progress bar, which Shorts don't use. Timestamps in a Short's description won't create chapters.
